What is Veer Zaara?
Veer Zaara is a movie that tells the story of Veer Pratap Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), an Indian Air Force officer, and Zaara Hayaat Khan (Preity Zinta), the daughter of a Pakistani politician. They meet by chance when Veer rescues Zaara from a bus accident in India. They fall in love, but face many obstacles due to their different nationalities and religions. Veer is imprisoned in Pakistan for 22 years on false charges, while Zaara devotes her life to his village in India. A young Pakistani lawyer, Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukerji), takes up his case and tries to reunite them.
Plot summary
The movie begins in 2004, when Saamiya Siddiqui is assigned to defend Veer Pratap Singh, who has been languishing in a Pakistani prison for 22 years without speaking to anyone. She learns that he is an Indian Air Force officer who came to Pakistan to rescue Zaara, a Pakistani girl who was stranded in India after fulfilling her surrogate mother's dying wish. Saamiya decides to find out the truth about Veer and Zaara's love story.
The movie then flashes back to 1982, when Veer meets Zaara for the first time on a bridge near his village. He saves her from falling into the river and takes her to his home. There, he learns that she is the daughter of Jahangir Hayaat Khan, a prominent politician in Pakistan. He also learns that she is engaged to Raza Sharazi (Manoj Bajpayee), a ruthless businessman who is also Jahangir's son-in-law. Veer decides to help Zaara reach Lahore safely.
On their way, they stop at various places and get to know each other better. They visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where Zaara feels a spiritual connection with Veer's religion. They also visit the Wagah border, where they witness the flag-lowering ceremony between India and Pakistan. They realize that they have fallen in love with each other, but are aware of the impossibility of their relationship.
Veer drops Zaara at Lahore railway station and bids her farewell. However, he soon realizes that he cannot live without her and returns to confess his feelings. He finds out that Zaara has left her engagement ring behind and follows her to her home. There, he meets Jahangir and Raza, who are hostile towards him. He also meets Zaara's mother Mariam (Kirron Kher), who sympathizes with him. He tells them that he loves Zaara and wants to marry her.
Jahangir agrees to let Veer marry Zaara on one condition: he has to leave his country and his identity and live in Pakistan as a Muslim. Veer agrees to the condition, but asks for some time to inform his family. Jahangir gives him 24 hours to do so.
Veer calls his uncle Chaudhary Sumer Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) and tells him about his decision. Sumer is shocked and angry, but Veer convinces him that he is doing the right thing. He also calls his best friend Shabbo (Divya Dutta), who works as a maid in Zaara's house. She is happy for him and promises to help him.
Meanwhile, Zaara is torn between her love for Veer and her duty towards her family. She decides to elope with Veer and asks Shabbo to arrange a meeting with him. Shabbo tells Veer to come to a nearby village, where Zaara will join him. However, Raza gets suspicious and follows Shabbo. He intercepts Veer and Zaara and shoots at them. Veer manages to escape with Zaara, but Raza chases them. He calls Jahangir and tells him that Veer has kidnapped Zaara.
Jahangir contacts the Pakistani police and asks them to arrest Veer. He also contacts the Indian authorities and accuses Veer of being a spy. He uses his influence to frame Veer for a bomb blast in a market. The police catch up with Veer and Zaara and arrest them. Raza arrives and shoots Zaara, who falls unconscious. He then takes her away, while Veer is taken to prison.
The movie then returns to 2004, where Saamiya is shocked by Veer's story. She asks him why he did not speak up for himself or contact his family or the Indian embassy. He tells her that he did not want to tarnish Zaara's reputation or endanger her life. He also tells her that he did not know what happened to Zaara after she was shot. He says that he only lived for her memories and hoped that she was happy somewhere.
